Does the app need an internet connection?

Only to start or restore your subscription. Every calculator, chart, sheet and report works with no signal at all — that is deliberate, because it has to work in the doghouse and on location where there is no bar of service. Once your subscription has been confirmed the app keeps working offline for up to 30 days before it needs to check in again.

Is there a subscription?

Yes. Kyanite Pro is $9.99 per month or $50 per year, with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. Kyanite Ultra adds DrillIQ and MudIQ for $20 per month or $119.99 per year, and you can also subscribe on the web at app.kyanitepro.com. It unlocks the full calculator library, kill sheets, cement jobs, LCM build sheets and inventory reports. The scientific calculator, field notes and the reference charts are free. There is no advertising, and you can cancel any time in Settings › Apple Account › Subscriptions.

Do I need an account or a login?

Not for the app itself. Every calculator, chart, sheet, inventory and note works with no account and no password, and if you work alone the app never asks who you are. Signing in with Google or Apple is only needed for one optional feature: Crews, which shares records with the hands you work with. If you do not use Crews, you will never see a login screen.

What is a Crew?

A Crew keeps the same figures in front of everybody on one location. Location volumes, inventory, notes, LCM build sheets, kill sheets and cement jobs can be shared, so a tank gauged by one hand shows up on everyone else's phone. Each screen has a Mine / crew switch, so your own private records and the crew's shared records never get mixed up. Every member needs their own Kyanite Pro subscription.

Who can change what in a Crew?

Admins can edit everything the crew shares and manage the roster. Members can read everything and can post location volumes and gain/loss readings — because a reading is useless if the hand holding the strap has to phone it in — but crew wells, inventory, build sheets, kill sheets, cement jobs and notes are the admin's record to keep. This is enforced on the server, not just in the app.

Which devices does it run on?

Accepted Answer

Any iPhone or iPad running iOS 18.0 or later — the layout is built for one-handed phone use in gloves, and scales up on iPad. The Kyanite web console runs in any modern browser on a computer, tablet or phone. A native Android app is coming soon; until then Android users can use the web console in Chrome with the same account and crew.

Can I use it on more than one device?

Yes — a subscription covers every device signed in to your Apple Account. Use Restore Purchases on the second device if it does not unlock straight away. Records you keep under Mine stay on the device that created them; records shared with a Crew follow you to any device you sign in on.

Where is my data stored?

Accepted Answer

On your device by default. Wells, calculations, gain/loss sheets, chemical inventory, LCM builds, cement jobs, kill sheets, notes, location volumes, your hitch schedule, favorites and settings are held in local storage on the iPhone or iPad itself. If you sign in, your own wells and saved calculations also sync to your account so they open in the web console, and records you deliberately share with a Crew are stored on our servers so the rest of your crew can see them.

Does my data sync between my phone and my iPad?

When you sign in, your own wells and saved calculations sync to every device and the web console on your account. Anything shared with a Crew syncs to every phone and browser on that crew as soon as it has signal. Other records under Mine stay on the device that created them. There is no iCloud sync of private records.

Question 10

What happens if I have no signal?

Accepted Answer

You keep working. Everything is written to the device first, and anything shared with a Crew goes up the next time you have coverage. Losing signal is not treated as an error, because on location it is normal.

Question 11

What happens to my data if I delete the app?

Accepted Answer

Anything under Mine is deleted with the app and cannot be recovered by us, because we never had a copy. Anything you shared with a Crew stays with the crew and comes back when you sign in again.

How do I get a record off the rig?

Accepted Answer

Sharing with a Crew is the built-in way — the figures are on everyone's phone as soon as they have signal. Where the app offers a share option, it hands the content to the standard iOS share sheet, so you can mail it, drop it in Files or AirDrop it to the company man.

Is my inventory history overwritten when a new day starts?

Accepted Answer

No. Each day is stored separately, and tomorrow opens with today's closing figures as its starting inventory. You can step back to any earlier date and see exactly what was on hand that day without changing it.

Question 14

What do VERIFIED, NEEDS VERIFICATION and EQUIPMENT SPECIFIC mean?

Accepted Answer

Every calculator states its own status. VERIFIED means the equation is a standard industry formula checked against published references and covered by our test suite. NEEDS VERIFICATION means the equation is in common field use but you should confirm it against your own company's references before you rely on it. EQUIPMENT SPECIFIC means the result depends on the make and model of the kit on your location — pump, centrifuge, screen — and you must use your equipment's published data.

Is the kill sheet a well control program?

Accepted Answer

No, and it is important that this is clear. The kill sheet and the well control calculators are a check on your arithmetic and a place to keep your pre-recorded data current. They do not make decisions. Every well control decision must follow the operator's and the contractor's well control program and the person in charge on location.

Question 16

Why does the kill mud weight round up but the leak-off values round down?

Accepted Answer

Because that is what the paper sheet requires, and it is the safe direction in each case. Kill mud weight is rounded up so you never under-kill the well; maximum allowable mud weight from a leak-off test is rounded down so you never over-estimate what the shoe will hold.

Question 17

Can I change how many decimal places are shown?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Settings lets you choose 0 to 4 decimal places, and the default is 2. You can also turn on metric equivalents to show beneath every result.

A calculator I need is missing. Can you add it?

Accepted Answer

Ask us. There is a suggestion form in Settings that opens a pre-filled email, or you can write to us directly at the address above. Tell us the calculation, the units you work in, and the reference you use for it — that last part is what lets us add it quickly and correctly.
